Jerry answered this much better than I ever could,
relative to the OS/2 side of the fence. But it looks
like slim pickings to me. There are a lot of tools on
the Dark Side. The vast majority can be found at
places like Videohelp.Com, in the Tools section. Many
of these are even free. There are also reviews and
user comments. My semi-informed impressions: the
various free tools generally have a much higher
learning curve. For someone like me -- forget about
it, without printing out a bunch of guides and
following them closely. I strongly suspect the
Shareware or Payware programs are going to be a lot
more accessible and more polished.

Most of the name Dark Side players (like PowerDVD, or
the one that comes with Nero), have a function to save
stills from a video clip that is playing. (AFAIK,
there is no such feature in WV or FFMPEG.) Don't
recall what formats you can save it in, maybe just
.BMP.
