You need to compare apples to apples. They are still significantly less
expensive that a SCSI drive of the same capacity.

Better depends on your needs. I've got several 250GB IDE drives around
here that all cost betwen $30 and $50. I can't think of a much better
choice for test boxes and secondary data dump drives.
