My typing is fine. It's my proof-reading that's lazy. I type fast, don't
really watch the screen and, at times, neglect to check if what I typed

There used to be a list of ignoreed charactes in there somewhere, although
I would not be surprised if the list has changed. I always found this
feature annoying, so others might have too and Google might have changed
the rules. IAC, I developed the habit of quoting which automatically got
the results I wanted. I'll have to experiment a bit and see where the
quotes are still needed.

Not AFAIK. It was a TWAIN package that supported a number of non-HP
scanners.
