Subject: SCOUG-Help: Little questions and big question

Hey folks,

My wife uses Mozilla for email. Recently, the contents of her inbox
disappeared. I thought maybe there was a read error on the harddisk at the
location of the file, or there was a corruption in the index files (*.msf?) so
I went to a command line. I tried to copy all the files to a temporary folder
so I might be able selectively delete files without losing anything important.
But the copy stopped on the Inbox file (70 MB) and eventually times out with a
"A device attached to the system is not functioning". No other apparent
problem wih the machine but it always does this on the specific file so it
seems like a file corruption problem.

I went to use the Gammatech Utilities "DIAG" utility which reads every file on
the hard disk for errors and it gave 7 files with this error, including the
Inbox and the Trash file of Mozilla. First come the little questions: Is
there any utility that i might be able to use to repair the Inbox and the other
files? The other ones look like they're program files so I should be able to
delete the error filled file and replace with an intact one. I'm afraid any
editor will generate errors when the file is asked to be read. I'm not sure
what to do to repair it if I have to use a disk editor.

The big question? Is this symptomatic of a disk that is starting to fail?

Thanks.

-Rocky
