Repair, no.  Copy, yes.  Dfsee.

Not really.  My programmers editor edits binary files just fine.  70MB, 
would keep it busy, but I've edit 40MB files in the past.

Possibly nothing.  Dfsee will replace what it can't read with a character 
of your choice, IIRC.  If you use spaces, you should get all but a few 
messages back after you reindex.

Hard to say.  It's definitely symtomatic of a disk that has developed a 
few errors.  What does the SMART status say?
