CRTs may be on the way out, market-wise. Particularly
the good to really good ones. I have liked the Iiyama
brand. Had a 21 incher of theirs that was made in
Japan (I don't think you'll find any of that
persauasion any more); it was excellent, expensive,
and heavy enough to give you a hernia if you had to
move it. I got about 4 years out of it. I replaced
this with an Iiyama Pro 454 which is an 18" CRT,
considerably lighter, considerably cheaper, and quite
good but not at the level of its predecessor. I'd buy
one of these again, if it happened to still be
available.
Relatives of mine have gone through a few of the
lower-end ViewSonic LCD panels, in their two
workstation office, never getting more than about 18
months out of them. There are quite a few competing
brands at this level, such as Envision. (I've not
been particularly impressed with the mostly no-name
panels and CRTs you see at the Pomona show. IMO, no
reason to go that route except for a low price and low
requirements.)
In regard to your better quality panels, which are
going to cost you significantly more, I think your
best bet will be Samsung, the Dell FP 200x (2001
series etc., or whatever the current model designation
is), or Planar panels. I have a 19" Planar panel,
which I've used as a backup and in travelling
situations. The Dells are actually rebadged Samsungs.
Planar is sold directly, or also by Dell. If you
read the reviews, I think this group will still be
among those favored. I'm no great fan of Dell as a
Co. to do business with, but these panels are often
available as online specials at up to 40 % off,
sometimes via online coupons (watch Techbargains.Com),
and sometimes even include free shipping. Under terms
like this you'd be getting something conspicuously
better at a competitive price.
I don't know what's going on currently with 16:9
displays, particularly in the panels. These used to
only be a few models at the high end of the (for
example) ViewSonic line, or the Apple Cinema models,
strictly for folks with lavish budgets.
