I would suspect a hardware problem caused by your activity inside the
case. I believe a trap 0008 is a trap in the error handler. (Correct me
if I'm wrong, Steven!)

I would reseat the other cards, cables, and RAM and try again. You might
want to try a few passes of memtest86 just for jollies.

I just went through a similar experience myself. It appeared that I had
lost all partitions on my main hard drive. Jan van Wijk suggested that I
check the IDE cables. Bingo! All seems to be back again.
