Thanks for responding. Here is a summary of what I have discovered. Two
computers go to TM Cable via the same Linksys 4-port Router. Trying eCs
and WIN2k on both machines, connections with IE are very much faster
than with Thunderbird 1.5.0.10. This is the contents of RESOLV2 which is
supplied by my ISP:

domain socal.rr.com
nameserver 76.168.0.1
nameserver 66.75.164.90
nameserver 66.75.164.90

I suspect my problem of slow connections probably has something to do
with my TCPIP setup in eCS, or maybe something in the setup of the
Lynksys router that treats IE differently from TB. I sure wish you and
some of the other gurus around here could help me solve this problem.
