Same problem here with high number of files, even when copying
HPFS-to-HPFS.

If you have thousands of files in only a few directories, zip those
directories to a new archive directory and tell your copying program to
skip the source directories so only the .zip files are copied. Much
faster than WPS/object copying. (Zip used to have some file size
limitations, don't know if that's been taken care of.)

Or use dSync, it's great if you want "instant access" to the copied
files (as opposed to some backup software which requires a restore
before the files may be used). dSync is _mirroring_ software. This
means it will delete anything in the target tree that isn't in the
source tree, so make sure you don't accidentally run it "backwards" or
your new files will be deleted.
