It's not supposed to be. If I could type, you might have figured out that

rSync is good because you don't need to bring up LAN connections and
shares to do the copying. There's also BkpDaemon, which does to EAs.
However, I've not tested it yet.

This is just reasonable caution. I have similar code which generates
backups of the form name-ver.ext or name-timestamp.ext. On FAT drives,
it limits itself to name.ver. I prefer to preserve the extension because
it makes that backups easier to use with apps that care about extensions.
