For a NIC, you can use a 3COM 3C589 or something RTL8139 based. Both work
well and can be had almost for free on eBay.

The USB controller is USB 1.x only so anything that does not do fallback
well is going to have issues. You can test the port with a USB mouse or
any of the available eCS/OS2 tools.
