The very best power saver is to turn off your computer when you're going
to be away from it for a while. In my experience, I'm usually away for
a longer time than I think I will be.

I read somewhere recently that around 20% of all electricity consumed in
the US goes to various machines, appliances, etc.
_when_they_are_"turned_off"_!

We recently got a new VCR / DVD recorder. I went through the setup of
the machine. It had a choice for power saving, which I took. When the
machine was powered off, it didn't show any lights on the front of the
machine. My daughter was unhappy that it didn't show the time of day,
so she went in and changed that setting. In our kitchen, we have an
electric oven with a microwave oven directly above it. Both of these
appliances display the time of day - no choice to turn it off.
Naturally, it is impossible to get the two times synchronized exactly.
Across the way, the dishwasher shows three lights while it is
operating. After it is finished, one light glows to tell you the dishes
are clean. No choice.

You may have a TV that has a "quick start" feature. If so, that means
the TV is never really off. I've read that plasma TV's use considerably
more power than LCD units. This stuff goes on and on.
