Well that is one thing I've liked about the Shuttle's
two IDE controllers: a CD or HDD can be on either --
interchangeably -- with either being bootable. (Just
one connector per each, though; no Master / Slave
business to deal with.)

Sounds like a desirable way to have it.
I think I'm going to give drive trays a go in this
next round, and maybe keep it one HDD per OS "family."
(But I just found a forum post about tray gotchas
with XP that may be of interest to Ray . . . . ) One
consideration in the tower layout this time would then
be the ease of cloning HDDs for backup, via the
plug-in trays.
I agree with you that if / when the system design and
drive letter issues start to induce a headache, it may
be time to simplify the whole thing.
