AT&T here has just terminated their TIME service --
the # you can call where an automated voice says "At
the tone, Pacific Standard time will be __:__." A
cost saving measure, no doubt. This was very useful
the morning after seasonal time changes, anytime you
needed to check the accuracy of your watch or clocks,
or if you did not have any convenient access to the
internet at that moment. So, here's a question for
all you Orange County folks: Does Verizon still have
such a number, that still works ? If not, are there
any other *phone call* (including cell phone)
services like this -- free or otherwise -- that you
know of ?
A cell phone itself may be a partial answer, in that
they seem to be fed some accurate real-time signal
that provides the time. However, it is not a
continuous countdown type of deal, with the seconds
included. For example, the (digital) watch I wear
most often tends to run fast, picking up an extra 15 -
20 seconds within just 2 or 3 weeks. I like to be
able to reset it -- to the second -- wherever I happen
to be. The TIME recording was great for that.
