Ray's probably right about analogies, but what the heck. Your's is not
even close.
What is happening is that the vendor has decided to honor an expired
coupon for a pre-paid meal, because he (possibly mistakenly) stated
publicly that the expiration date would not apply to this particular
coupon.
When you purchase a services contract, like SSS, you are purchasing access
to products over a period of time, not specific products. Obviously, the
vendor is going to try to provide access to enough products so that you
will find it beneficial to renew your subscription when the time comes.
