Subject: SCOUG-Help: Communications conniptions

Content Type: text/plain

After many years of trouble-free dial-up internet access, I'm
suddenly experiencing problems.

First, I found myself unable to upload e-mails through my local
access to LAFN. Error message: "SMTP: Cannot connect to SMTP
server 'smtp.lafn.org." That problem went away after a couple of
days, but then returned and persists. It occurs only with the
local access number; so I am able to post messages by dialing
directly into LAFN's principal 818 number.

Now, I can no longer DOWNLOAD e-mails or news or connect to web
sites. Internet Adventurer (mail and news) reports "Call to
POP server failed." and "Call to newsserver failed"; Netscape
reports "Netscape is unable to locate the server www.scoug.com.
Please check the server name and try again." These problems
occur with both my local access number and LAFN's 818-number.

Anyone got a clue to what might be disabling BOTH of these
programs? What can I do to diagnose and correct this problem?
WAGs will be gratefully accepted.

Configuration:

OS/2 v4.52
Dial-up via Injoy v2.30. (Connections appear normal.)
E-mail and news via Internet Adventurer v1.51
Web access via Netscape v4.61

Authentication of uploads (now required by LAFN) is provided
by Bob Eager's SMTP47. (Internet Adventurer, which doesn't
offer upload authentication, "sends" each message to SMTP47
in a hard-drive directory, then SMTP47 uploads accumulated
messages with the required authentication.)

It seems unlikely that these problems trace to LAFN, as I
continue to have normal access to web sites through both the
local (910) and the 818 numbers from a Windows (ugh!) machine.
