Subject: SCOUG-Programming: Lynn's Open Server Project (was: Where to from here?)

Content Type: text/plain

"We need a new location for the equipment, Lynn."

Peter,

I was fairly certain I didn't fully understand all the implications
in Rollin's notice of withdrawal of web services. I was equally
certain that we had plenty of people who did. I was late for
the meeting on Saturday due to my upside-down method of
reading Yahoo maps. I missed the first half-hour, so can't
comment on any discussion which occurred on this subject. I
have the general impression that none did.

Our current project in the programming SIG in support of open
source for OS/2 relies heavily on our using the SCOUG website.
Thus we have a particular need for resolution with the same
sense of urgency that Rollin has for relief.

We need a new location. I thought we needed different
hardware as well. It seemed like we could use the same
software. We needed to migrate some files as well. Then to
top it off we need one or more people to replace the
administrative services that Rollin has provided up to now.

I guess I need to ask what do we need at a location to use as
part of the selection process? I have a DSL connection with a
fixed IP address. Is it, one, suitable? If so, what would I need
in terms of a router, etc.?

I'm depending on others that know these things to contribute
here so that more of us can intelligently participate in the
decision process and contribute to its resolution. It seems a
proper topic for consideration by the SCOUG board. We could
effectively meet online, lay out the situation and the
requirements, come to a resolution, and as quickly as possible
accede to Rollin's request.
