This is exactly how it is done, under the covers. As Nathan mentioned,
the problem is the message handling. The dialog window message handler
and WinDefDlgProc do a lot of work for you.

It's just easier to do it this way. This applies to many of the controls.
They were designed to be used in a dialog box. While it is possible to
have them owned by a standard window, it takes more work. There are
samples out there show how to do this.
