Q. Dear Mr. Know-It-All,
Netscape renders some pages with no text. The pictures are OK but I really want to read the pages. What can I do?
A.
As installed, Netscape uses Courier New as the default font. On some systems, Courier New is not installed and the result is blank pages. Use Edit->Preferences to set the font to something else and your pages should display.
Q. Dear Mr. Know-It-All,
I can't get the Windows 3.1 RealPlayer plugin to run with Netscape 4.61. It works when run from a WinOS/2 session and I have added it to the Applications list. What am I doing wrong?
A.
This is usually caused by mixed up plugin DLL's. Netscape 4.61 works somewhat differently that previous versions. The WinOS/2 DLL's go in:
\Netscape\Program\Win16\Plugin
For each plugin you install, Netscape creates a support DLL in
\Netscape\Program\Plugin
This DLL has the same name as the WinOS/2 DLL, but will be small, 2,000 to 3,000 bytes.
If the DLL locations or sizes are not correct:
- Shut down Netscape
- Copy the WinOS/2 DLL to \Netscape\Program\Win16\Plugin, if needed
- Delete the support DLL from \Netscape\Program\Plugin
- Restart Netscape
Netscape will create the support DLL and RealPlayer should work. In fact, this fix applies to all WinOS/2 plugins, not just Real Player.
If, however, you find that this fix does not work, there are a couple of other reasons the plugin may fail to work. Ask Mr Know-It-All at
mrkia@scoug.com and give him your specifics.
