Well, after I ran checkini and it hung telling me it couldn't deactivate
class EZPLAY, I looked for the cleanini utility that someone else
mentioned, and I found it on the web (I had previously bookmarked the
site), downloaded it and ran it. Interestingly, here are the file sizes
before and after:

OS2.INI 709425 before, 709773 after (that's strange, it increased!)

OS2SYS.INI 450757 before, 209130 after (wow!)

I then set up for a desktop archive and rebooted. All seems fine, except
that one internet utility program (PMIPMON.EXE) that I have been
autostarting now fails, but it's not real important so I'll see if I can
get it running again at my leisure. Meantime, for some reason I haven't
experienced the blue screen hang at all during my machinations today, so
hopefully you guys got me on the right track.
