What prevents older JVM from running newer apps is usually the libraries.
The libraries that ship as part of the JRE are the major distinguishing
factor between older and newer versions. Often, as with swing and
security, you can just add the library to the older JRE.

I'm not sure about 2.02. It probably only runs with the ancient Java
1.02. Netscape 4.61 has built in support for v1.1.8 and can use a plugin
to run Java 1.3.1. I don't recall if Innotek or Golden Code have supplied
plugins for NS 4.61. You'll have to check the release notes.
