Is the runtime engine the same in all versions (except for bug fixes, of
course), or has Sun added to the "instruction set" which would make it
impossible for older runtime engines to execute newer Java code using
these new instructions?

I use Netscape 4.61 and 2.02 very occasionally for web browsing, and I'm
using Java 1.1.8 (latest fix). Do you mean that Netscape 4.61 & 2.02
won't work properly with a Java newer than 1.1.8?
