Gary:

I was faced with a similar decision recently, and chose Plextor,
based on quality and reputation. I started out with a Texel
(predecessor to Plextor) 2x SCSI CD reader (at $400!) before the '94
Northridge 'quake. The Plextor 2410A model writes the inner cylinders
at (up to) 16x in constant linear velocity mode and then (optionally)
speeds up at the outer cylinders to 20X or 24X. The faster writing
doesn't make an appreciable difference in overall time, since it only
occurs at/near the outer edges of the disk. Most CD writers work
this way, in some measure or other. It writes the newer re-writable
media (only) at 10x, but this is not a big factor for me. At some
point, fast enough is indeed fast enough! I've not used it with RSJ.

There is a new-in-the-box, but old stock Plextor 2410A on eBay at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2751358697&category=44952

presently at $50. This auction expires Sept. 10 at 9am.

I also considered a Yamaha, as I wanted a BIG buffer. I really wanted
another SCSI writer, but gave in to the IDE "dark side" on both price
and availability.
