I haven't needed to fire up my old external V.90 modem in quite awhile, but I do
like to have it connected. No matter what the providers claim, your broadband
service will go down for awhile, sooner or later. When that happens, it's nice to
have some sort of fallback. I believe this type of modem is still available -- probably
at local computer shows, for sure on Ebay. Win-modems are just going to be a PITA,
any way you slice it.
If you *must* have an internal card-modem, or your new rig no longer offers serial
ports, I don't have any good suggestions.
