Don't have an answer for you, just a comment.
Although the cable service I have seen that other
people have (mostly Time Warner) is appreciably faster
than the DSL I have, they seem to have this experience
about once a week, on average. The cable modem and
the router need to be powered down for awhile and then
Reset, sometimes the computers as well. This will
generally resynch everything and restore their
service.

By contrast, the DSL here very seldom craps out on me
(can't recall the last incidence -- has to be many
months ago), but when it does there is generally some
external line or telco infrastructure fault that will
last for a few hours until it gets resolved. Forced
to choose between these two situations, I think I
would continue to opt for the DSL, whenever faced with
that decision.
