FWIW, you might be able to fix this if you are willing to do some hunting
and hacking. What you see on the Thunderbird screen is mostly generated
by xul. This is a combination of xml and javascript that formats the vast
majority of what you see on the screen. This is all stored in .jar files
in the chrome directory. It should be possible with some work to modify
the standard chome to add a hide attachment window button or make it
resizable. You might want to check to be sure there's not already and
extension to does this.
If you want to work at hacking the code, I can get you started. Of
course, you will be required to do a presentation of your results. :-)
