I think it is part of the post-install ACPI. process. I have turned it
on once, and turned it off on a copy that was going to a lessor
machine. But, boot still says one processor active. I haven't chased
the subject.
You seem to have a long standing concern for performance. Before you
spend a lot more time chasing theories, rumors and other stories, I
think you need an objective, relative to your real world, system for
measuring performance. Gut feel when crunching files is not a good
basis for spending money. And , when you find such a system, send me a
copy and you can compare your good stuff to my cheap stuff.
But then, I am all for buying stuff "just because".
