Umm, in the Old West there was something called a Livery where you could  
rent a horse when you needed it.  You paid for the _use_ of the horse.  
 
While there were probably a couple of lawyers in Dodge City, my  
understanding is that the law for horse thiefs was often administered  
immediately and mechanically.
